Late 19th Century Colonialism: Trade tlourished and markets expanded in the late 19th century. There was also a darker side of this progress. In many countries, this expansion of trade and dose relationship with the world economy meant loss of freedom and livelihood of the people. Late 19th century European conquests led many painful cconomic, social and ecological changes in the colonised countries. Through these changes, the countries linked with the world economy.
Rival European powers in Africa drew up borders demarcating their respective territories in 1885, when they met in Berlin. While Britain and France made large additions to their overseas territories. Belgium and Germany became new colonial powers. The USA also became a colonial power by taking over some colonies in the late 1890s earlier held by Spain.
